Meaning-Making & Therapeutic Change
Dr. Krug's presentation combines
lecture, case examples and experiential exercises to identify and describe the
process of existential meaning-making, and explores how the act
of “making sense” of an experience, is central to our client's therapeutic change.
Recent research has identified that “contextual factors” rather than specific techniques or treatments are overwhelmingly responsible for effective therapy. Other prominent research shows that meaning-making, a contextual factor fundamental to Existential-Humanistic therapy, is at the heart of transformational healing and change in therapy. In lecture and exercises, Dr. Krug will show how individuals participate in constituting their realities by making meaning of their perceptions and experiences and then comprehend their new experiences using meanings made in the past. Dr. Krug will show how consciousness, personal freedom and responsibility can operate in this reflective therapy process to promote creation of new ways of being with self, others and the world.
Participants in the workshop will have the opportunity to:
- Describe and define the existential meaning-making process.
- Learn how meaning making is foundational to therapeutic change and how to use meaning making with therapy clients.
- Participate in exercises that illustrate and teach the process.
- Practice contextual factors like presence in dyadic exercises in meaning making.
